A cool evening with rain in the air was the backdrop for the newly named League Trophy game tonight against a team that we have already visited this season in the League. Both sides made a number of changes to the line-ups that turned out in last Saturday's wins at home to Carlisle United for the Terriers and at Cheltenham for the Rovers. Even so both teams were made up of experienced first team players. The Rovers defended the end in front of their supporters for the first half.
The home team was the first on the attack with Abbott showing up well with a header causing Filan to save and then five minutes later, a stab wide to a through ball by Hardy. The Rovers made the odd stuttering attack in the first 15 minutes but didn't trouble Glennon in the Huddersfield goal. On 15 minutes, the Rovers were awarded a free kick just outside the Huddersfield penalty area. Thornton's shot came back off the wall to Lee but his low drive was just wide. A period of even play followed, then on 26 minutes the Rovers scored the game's opening goal. A free kick just over the halfway line on the right touchline was swung over by Steve Roberts and found it's way to Guy on the left. A 1-2 with Heffernan took Guy to the byline and a low cross to the middle was knocked in by PRICE from a crowd of home players. Glennon, the keeper, was one of them and had to receive treatment before being substituted five minutes later. The Rovers now took the initiative and had more of the play up to the break but neither keeper was troubled leaving the Rovers to go in with a one goal lead.
Huddersfield started the second half in lively fashion, with Doncaster born Schofield getting a shot on target from 25 yards but Filan held it comfortably. Five minutes in and Lockwood, for the Rovers, headed wide from a cross on the left by Thornton following a free kick. The home team was having the better of things so far but had not troubled Filan. On 55 minutes, a through ball by Price saw Rachubka get there before Guy. Two minutes more and Price, to the left of goal, took a cross-cum-shot from Heffernan and hit the ball across the face of goal but there was no red shirts there to touch in. As the hour point came up, Booth shot over from the edge of the box following a corner then following further pressure by the home team, Steve Roberts left his back pass a little short, Filan got there but, under pressure from Abbott, could only get his clearance as far as BOOTH, who from 25 yards, shot into an empty net for an equalising goal after 61 minutes. Five minutes on and McDaid let fly from 30 yards and was just wide. It had developed into a fierce cup-tie now as Huddersfield scented a winner and put the pressure on but the Rovers defended stoutly. On 84 minutes, a mistake by Hardy let Price in on the Rovers left. He squared to Guy but his first time effort was wide. Rachubka was in action then to somehow stop Price on a post then push away a shot by Heffernan and hold a shot from Thornton. Three minutes from time, GUY was put through, ran on and slotted past the keeper to put the Rovers in front. The second half had been a cracking cup-tie after a tepid first half and the Rovers were declared the winners when the referee blew for time.
