A sunny but cold afternoon in the capital, perfect weather for a game of football. The Rovers made two changes from Tuesday's line-up, Steve Roberts, back from suspension replacing Matt Mills and Brian Stock, back after injury, coming in for Mark Wilson.
The Rovers had much the better of the opening ten minutes without unduly troubling Evans in the Millwall goal. At the other end Sullivan hadn't even touched the ball. Then, on 10 minutes, the Rovers won a corner on their right. The ball came out of defence to Gareth Roberts, who hit a cracking shot from 30 yards that Evans had to dive for and push away, a teammate putting out for a corner. This was also put out for another corner, which was cleared. On the quarter hour a good build-up led to Green feeding Price, who turned but was falling back as he shot thus scooping the ball over the bar. Two mimutes later and a low cross from Gareth Roberts on the left was laid back by McCammon for Coppinger to drill a low shot against the face of the post, the ball bouncing well back into play. Over the next few minutes, the Rovers besieged the Millwall goal, with Wellens forcing Evans to push away a shot and Green both putting wide of goal. On 26 minutes the home team won a corner but the Rovers won the ball with Price on the edge of his own penalty area. He played to Green who set Gareth Roberts on a long run down the Rovers left. A low cross to the onrushing Price had him hit the bouncing ball wide of the far post. As the half hour approached a 25 yards free kick by Stock went just wide. Price then brought a sprawling save from Evans, who was substituted minutes later having took a knock earlier. The Rovers continued with their domination of the match until the 42nd minute when a corner on the right by Stock caused general mayhem in the Millwall penalty area before PRICE found enough space to rifle in from close range. Two minutes later, the home team had their one and only chance when Forbes, on the left, crossed for Alexander, looking suspiciously offside, to head wide from about ten yards with only Sullivan to beat.
Millwall were quicker off the mark at the start of the second half but Simpson came nearest to scoring after 49 minutes but his shot from from 25 yards was just over the bar. Laird followed this up a minute later by firing wide. After 52 minutes the Rovers had warmed up as McCammon rounded Senda on the Rovers left to curl a shot just over the angle of bar at the far post. Minutes later a corner on the Rovers right came out to Green to hit a piledriver from the angle of the penalty area that Edwards, in the Millwall goal, tipped over the bar. The resultant corner came out to Wellens, 20 yards out. His shot went into the ground and Forbes, on the goal-line headed over for another corner to the Rovers. Three successive corners followed as the Millwall defence struggled to clear their lines. Over the next ten minutes the Rovers dominated the play with a shot from Wellens being well held by the keeper and following a good build-up on the Rovers right, Stock hit a drive wide of the far post. A short flurry of activity by the home team didn't bear any fruit and the status quo resumed. On 75 minutes, COPPINGER was well wide with an effort but a minute later a terrific drive from distance by the same player bulletted into the top corner of the net to extend the Rovers lead. Substitutions were made on the Rovers side but the flow didn't stop. Coppinger put over the bar from 20 yards and in a rare foray forward, Senda put over the Rovers bar from 25 yards. Two minutes into added-on time and a cross from the left touchline by Wilson was volleyed into the net by GREEN from the right side of the penalty area. Heffernan had one effort tipped round a post and then another wide as the Rovers ran out winners by three clear goals and well deserved to do so.
