MY FIRST GAME
DoncasterRoversFC.co.uk knows that supporting the Rovers is a passion; a love affair. And, as with all love affairs - there needs to be a beginning. We ask Doncaster Rovers supporters to send in their memories of their first games.
My first game at the Rovers was against Swansea TOWN in 1957, not long after Alick broke his leg. I went with a gang of lads from Oswin Avenue school.
I was stood by the popside wall near the halfway line at Belle Vue, I can remember Harry Gregg playing and three players called Walker (confusing!), the crowd sang a song called Walter, Walter lead me to the Alter! - For Walter Kelly our center forward, also known as Cowboy Kelly - 'cos he had bowed legs.
We played 2-3-5.

I remember it like it was yesterday... it was in the Coca Cola Cup in 1997/98 season (we all know what happened this season :( ), Donny had just been drawn against Nottingham Forest.
They had just been relegated from the top flight, whereas Donny were in the bottom division at the time.
There was a big crowd to see if Doncaster could out smart the 'mighty Nottingham Forest'. Unfortunately it was a sign of things to come that season. Doncaster lost 8-0, but i knew that Donny were the club for me that day.

Why we fell in love with the Rovers.
Was it when the Rovers moved to the Keepmoat?
Or was it when one of my sons, Shane, 5 at the time won a competition, to be a mascot at the very first match at the Keepmoat against Huddersfield on the 1st January 2007?
OR was it watching my son Shane running out in front of thousands of fans, with Paul Heffernan to his right and James Coppinger to his left?
OR was it when Shane was returned to me with his very own soccer ties, with his surname name on (MCGREGOR) after the Doncaster v Huddersfield game on 1st January 2007.
OR was it when my son's picture was in the next programme as a mascot?
OR was it when we went to the Bolton FA Cup match and JJ Price came up and gave my sons Kane, then 7 and Shane a pair of his very own soccer ties?
OR was it when I took my youngest son Harry, 4 at the time, to his first Keepmoat game against Scunthorpe?
OR was it when Harry's name got mentioned over the mike in front of thousands of fans?
OR was it when Harry got his photo taken on the pitch by Steve Uttley at the Rotherham game, and had it signed by Paul Heffernan? (Thanks Steve, for that)!
OR was it when Kane and I went to Cardiff and we won?
OR was it when my son Kane had his photo in the next programme with a Bristol Rovers supporter at Cardiff?
OR was it the Doncaster v Bradford Johnstone's Paint Trophy game when my son Kane saw Jason Price and company sat behind the sub bench, and went to say hello ended up sitting with them and came back 15 minutes later with his and his brother Shane's soccer ties signed?
OR was it the Leeds v Doncaster match at Elland Road and we won?
OR WILL IT BE WHEN WE BEAT LEEDS AT THE KEEPMOAT ON THE 1ST OF APRIL?

Oh the memories!
I was introduced to the pains of following your local lower league club in 1987.
I attended a soccer school run by Doncaster Rovers at Balby Carr School, if my memory is not playing tricks on me.
We were all given a free ticket to watch the Rovers at home to Leyton Orient, forcing my dad to attend a team he had long since turned his back on.
We were sat in the soon to be burnt down Main Stand with plenty of metal to obscure your view.
What looked like a stale 0-0 result was transformed by my all-time hero Mark Rankine as he rounded the keeper, and attempted to miss an open goal by blasting the ball fractionally under the bar.
HOOKED FOR LIFE.
That damn day has left me with a life of misery, empty pockets, and nightmares that I would not swap for the world.
As an exile now stuck in the wilderness of Milton Keynes, my club follows me everywhere from the sticker in my car, my explanation of needing time off to drive to obscure places, or even the couple of tattoos that I sport showing my unerring love for a club that has shown me more bad days than good, but that what makes the good times all the more special.
Mark Rankine ruined my life, and I owe him so much!
