ROVER THE MOON
Doncaster Rovers Football Club have certainly made the headlines this past week with the possibility of automatic promotion circling the Club up until the defeat at the hands of fellow horse racing town Cheltenham.
However, even following the defeat at Whaddon Road - a Doncaster Rover has made headlines whilst players and supporters dealt with disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion - and it was on the race course as opposed to a football pitch.
Racehorse 'Doncaster Rover' won the Lily Agnes Stakes at Chester on Wednesday afternoon, with jockey Frankie Dettori riding in the famous red and white hoops of the horses' namesake club.
DoncasterRoversFC.co.uk visited the Martin Grange Racing stables in Bawtry on Thursday morning, where all members of staff were still jubilant after Doncaster Rover's win at Chester.
"It was a fantastic win," said Stuart Parr, Doncaster Rover's trainer.
"We tried to win at Doncaster for the Doncaster Rovers lads; but we were pipped to second. I'm hoping now that the win for Doncaster Rover at Chester will compensate for that."
"Hopefully, the success of Doncaster Rover this week will pass onto Doncaster Rovers in the Play-Offs and hopefully the team can be promoted at Wembley."
"There are a couple of members of staff here at Martin Grange Racing who have put money on a double; Doncaster Rover to win at Chester and Doncaster Rovers to be promoted to The Championship. One half of the bet has come in and now, hopefully so can the second."
The Martin Grange Racing stables truly are a sight to behold. Set upon a beautiful backdrop, the stables have first-class facilities and are the home to many a successful horse. Sponsored by racing supreme Willie McKay - who himself has many horses trained and raised at the Martin Grange racing stables, it is also the home to horses owned by football personalities, such as former Everton player and Sunderland manager Peter Reid, Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton and Cardiff City winger Trevor Sinclair.
"We have a fair amount of professionals who come up, through their connections with Willie McKay - who they are good friends with; they love their horse racing and it's local. We have a nice set-up here hopefully we will have more success."
Doncaster Rover is part owned by three Doncaster businessmen - all of whom are Doncaster Rovers season ticket holders. So, whilst Doncaster Rovers should hopefully be tasting success soon in the Play-Offs - the success of Doncaster Rover can continue on the racecourse; with Doncaster Rover next scheduled to race at Royal Ascot.
