WILSON ON HOMETOWN FRIENDLY
Midfielder Mark Wilson is looking ahead to Saturday's pre-season friendly with a bit more excitement than the rest of the Doncaster Rovers squad.
Scunthorpe-born, Wilson has the chance to play against his hometown team in a game that also marks the return from a nasty groin tear picked up last season.
"It's always interesting playing your hometown team and I am sure that I will get some stick off of some mates. In a way it is just another game, but it is against my hometown team and I would like to do well against them."
Wilson returned to Cantley Park on Friday following a five-day training camp at Leicestershire's RAF Cottesmore base.
"Pre-season has been good; we've had another experience at RAF Cottesmore. That was a good five days where we did a lot of team-building stuff, which I'm sure will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season. The task that we had on the final day was interesting - I know there was a lot of footage on this website - but it was good, it was team building and it definitely got us all thinking and it certainly had the desired effect."
Now that pre-season training has commenced, the Club's new signings have had the chance to meet and play alongside the players that previously wore the red and white hoops.
"The new lads seem to be fitting in really well," Wilson comments.
"We've had a few new faces in this morning (Friday). They are good players, they fit in really well and I hear that they are all playing on Saturday. It will be interesting to see how they get on."
As important as playing in a pre-season clash is the ability to have a run-out onto the Keepmoat Stadium turf as early as possible - a sentiment that Wilson believes is echoed amongst the Rovers players.
"It's always good to get a run-out on the pitch at Keepmoat Stadium and especially go get it early doors. I'm sure it's the same for the rest of the lads - to get out there and to start gelling in a proper game - we're all looking forward to it."
And, the following day will see the Stadium's doors flug open for the annual Doncaster Rovers Open Day, where the players will train on the pitch before meeting the supporters and signing autographs.
"It's always nice to meet the fans; it helps to form a bond. They were magnificent last year and I am sure that they will be again next season. It's a good opportunity to get 'up close and personal' with us, and likewise - us with them. I'm looking forward to it."
