Manchester City - The Media Circus
Friday 6th July is a day that rocked the media department of Doncaster Rovers Football Club - and the effects are still being felt at this moment in time. On Friday 6th July, Sven Goran-Eriksson was named the manager of Premier League side Manchester City.
The events at Manchester City have been nationwide news since the speculation of a takeover came to light some months ago. Speculation was heightened when it was reported by the national media that former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra was close to completing a takeover of the Eastlands club and, when completed, would attempt to lure Sven Goran-Eriksson to take over the managerial vacancy left by Stuart Pearce.
It was shortly prior to the 6th July that it was felt that Sven would almost certainly take over at the City of Manchester Stadium, when once again the national media reported that the former England manager had agreed in principle to become Manchester City, once Shinawatra had completed a 75% takeover of the football club.
On Friday 6th July - the speculation was over. Thaksin Shinawatra took over 75% of Manchester City Football Club and the former England manager became the current Manchester City manager. Then it was reported who Sven Goran-Eriksson would make his Manchester City bow against; Sean O'Driscoll's Doncaster Rovers.
At that exact moment, the chaos in the Doncaster Rovers media office began, with both Steve Uttley, Chris Mortley and Maz Ahmed inundated with calls, faxes and e-mails for media accreditation from media all across the country.
The first to register their request was Sky Sports, who have been granted access to the television gantry to report on Sky Sports News for the game. From that moment on, the requests kept coming and coming.
National newspapers The Sun, The Mirror, The People, The Mail on Sunday, The Times, Sunday Express, The Independent and The Guardian will all be attending the landmark game at the Keepmoat Stadium, with an army of photographers set to surround the turf.
The press and media coverage for the clash with Manchester City was already enormous, with press and car park passes literally flying out of the media office. Even on the way to the pre-season friendly against Retford United, calls were flooding in on mobiles for details on how to get media accreditation.
The day after the game against Retford, the media frenzy developed on a whole new level. Due to the success of the former Lazio manager, the media in Sven Goran-Eriksson's native Sweden have also started to get in contact with us here at the Doncaster Rovers media office and will be attending the game for their respective press. In addition to the media in Sweden attending the game against the Rovers on Saturday, the media in Thailand will also be attending - due to the interest in their former PM Shinawatra.
The press box will literally be packed to the rafters, with media covering this pre-season friendly across the globe. It certainly has been an eventful week for the Rovers media department.
