Woods: "The ambition that is here within this football club is fantastic"
Doncaster Rovers manager Sean O'Driscoll pulled off a fantastic coup this summer in signing promising Scottish midfielder Martin Woods from Yorkshire neighbours Rotherham. Woods was a bright spark in a difficult season for the Millers last term, with many Rovers fans remembering the cracking goal he scored against us - the first of his Rotherham career.
Now the tables have turned and the Miller is now a Rover, having just spent his first full week training with Sean O'Driscoll's team.
"I'm really enjoying it. Good set of lads and the training pitch is really good to play on. The fact that I have only moved from Rotherham to Doncaster has made it a lot easier. I've been able to just stay in my same flat in Leeds and that has made things easy. I think it was also good that I knew some of the lads from playing against them last year so it is a lot easier than, say, my move from Sunderland to Rotherham."
So how does the training compare to that of past clubs?
"The training is a little bit different from what I am used to, but not in a bad way - I am really enjoying it as well. It's a lot more thought through and I think that it will bring me on as a player better."
The signing of Martin Woods has brought a great deal of expectation to the Rovers faithful. His ability with the ball across different areas of midfield and his keen eye for goal are traits that supporters are eager to see, with nobody more eager to please the fans than the man himself.
"I hope I can make the supporters happy. I'm not sure of any hypes or things that have been mentioned about me because I don't look at stuff like that. I just concentrate on the games and I am looking forward to that. I am happy though that the supporters are behind me and I think that they are expecting us to do stuff this season. Now is the time to do that for them."
The 21-year old midfielder was subject to lots of media speculation as to where his future lay after relegation from League One with Rotherham last season. However, Woods is certain of the main reason that the place in question was going to be Doncaster.
"The ambition that is here within this football club is fantastic. Just after I've signed, they've signed Richie (Wellens) now and, since playing against Richie last year I think that he is a really good player. Obviously he could have ended up in the Championship as well so the fact that he came here is another showing of the ambition here."
So was there interest from higher level football clubs?
"There were three teams in the Championship who came in for me before I signed here at Doncaster Rovers. They put contracts down but I just think that I'd rather gradually get to that level with a team as opposed to going there and fighting for survival. I think that we can easily get to the Championship. I wasn't interested in going to a club and being a squad player - I have no interest in doing that at this stage in my career. I want to play week in-week out and I hope I can do that here if I play well. It's definitely something I am looking forward to. It should be a good year."
Martin Woods made his Doncaster Rovers bow in the second half of the pre-season friendly against Retford United and continued in the second half against Worksop Town at Sandy Lane.
"It was good to get on the pitch against Retford and Worksop. I hate running, I just hate it. I think that is so boring, so getting into the games is something I look forward to. I really enjoyed it and it was good to get the strip on and stuff. It made me feel settled to wear the shirt and get some games under my belt."
Woods began his career in the North East where he played for Sunderland in the Premier League. As a result, he is a man qualified to know a thing or two about this Saturday's visitors to the Keepmoat Stadium - Manchester City. However his brief experience doesn't dampen the excitement of playing against top-quality opposition.
"It will be good. I'm looking forward to it. A friendly is just another build up to the season. It's all gradual and I am looking forward to it, especially pitting my wits against some quality players. I only got a wee taste of it in the Premiership with Sunderland and at the end of the day, that is where you want to be as a player and I don't think that it is totally impossible for us to be there one day. It's going to be great to play against their players."
