Junior Rover
Junior Witter is a man who has been seen occasionally frequenting Doncaster Rovers Football Club. The current World Light-Welterweight Champion boxer was seen most recently by some at the club's Open Day at the Keepmoat Stadium; however the man nicknamed 'the Hitter' popped into the Keepmoat for a chat about what has been happening in terms of his career and his new passion - the Rovers.
So what is it about Doncaster Rovers that has attracted the fighter?
"It be the other half. She's been a massive Rovers fan since long before I met her. She got me coming down to Belle Vue and it has just snowballed from that - but I'm enjoying it."
Witter's girlfriend Jo admits that even though Junior is keen to watch the Rovers now - it wasn't always that way.
"He wasn't a football fan - he's a boxer and that is his life. With me, I am a massive football fan. The first game I got him to come to was the game against Real Sociedad. I convinced him that they were like a Premier League side and he should come and see that we weren't a rubbish side. Obviously, it rained and he was saying he would never come again, but I twisted his arm. He's been to see a game against Bradford as well, that being where he's from when, we were away from home. Since then, I've managed to reel him in."
Junior has made a series of appearances on the pitch prior to games at either Belle Vue or the Keepmoat, with the supporters cheering the fighter - something that pleases the former Commonwealth Light-Welterweight Champion.
"I think that the people of Doncaster have got right behind me since it was revealed that I am a Rovers fan, which is obviously really good. I'm really getting into it now, I like coming to watch the games and it's showing because now I am starting to know who all the players are and what they can do. From watching Rovers I can easily understand how the supporters get into their football the way that they do."
So what would Junior Witter's advice be to Sean O'Driscoll's team?
"Just enjoy it. Go out there, play well and have fun. Just try your hardest - you are a good team and it's starting to come together."
