Brian Stock missed the opening clashes of Doncaster Rovers League One campaign this season - after undergoing a hernia operation during pre-season. Since his return, the midfielder has been an ever-present in Sean O'Driscoll's starting eleven.

Instrumental in his first game back against Swansea, Stock's performances in the centre of the park have added a new dimension to the team, using his passing and moving ability to the full in a recent three-man midfield.

Stock continued his run of impressive performances in Sunday's clash against Huddersfield Town - capping a solid performance with the game's opening goal - and what a goal it was!

"I had a feeling today, I told a couple of people what odds I was on to score. I obviously never made a bet myself. Even the Chairman encourages me to shoot every game and for this one, I just got my head down and fortunately - it was on target."

Despite his modesty at the goal itself, Stock remains adamant that his goal could have only come as a result of great work from the rest of his team mates, most notably that of the man who set the 24-year old up for his first goal of the season.

"When you play with someone like James Coppinger, he links play up very well. He is a nightmare for defences, because he is so good at playing into spaces made by defenders. He's a delight to play with - he bounces passes and he's always going to set up goals. He did it last week at Luton and he did it against Huddersfield. He made a great run and pulled it back for me and I am happy that I was able to finish it."

The recent new-look midfield, which has seen Stock link up with second goal scorer Mark Wilson and yesterday's Man of the Match Ritchie Wellens is something that the Winchester-born player believes is pivotal to the side's good performances.

"When we play three in the middle, it's with players who are prepared to pass the ball. If you have that, then it causes problems for the opposition. On a pitch as nice as the Keepmoat with the space that we can get, we can destroy teams. If everyone can get behind us, then with this we can push up the League."

With the club suffering through a lack of strikers, due to Paul Heffernan recovering from a groin injury and in-form Lewis Guy suspended for the Huddersfield game - Stock believes that the ability of Rovers have in scoring goals from midfield is important in the team's progression in the League.

"If you can get midfielders getting ten goals a season then that can only help. Then you look at the types of players that weren't even involved today. It shows just how strong a squad we have got and how important it is that we all stick together. Hopefully we can develop on the bond we have and make a push for promotion this season."

Despite Doncaster Rovers dominating proceedings at the Keepmoat against Huddersfield Town, Brian Stock insists that it wasn't as easy as the Rovers may have made it seem.

"It didn't feel comfortable to be honest. They made us work hard and they are a decent side - they'll cause teams problems. We had to deal with it and we defended well. We had a little spell where we wobbled, but we also knew how important it was to not concede goals. Yesterday it was nice to know that we kept a clean sheet and close the game up with a 2-0 win."

One criticism of Sunday's performance from manager Sean O'Driscoll is that another performance passed where the Rovers could have scored a hatful of goals. The new number 8 for the Rovers believes that it is only a matter of time before 'could have' will turn into 'will have'.

"The chances that we could have had shows that we have it in ourselves to score more than we have been doing. Saying that, if we can turn out performances and 2-0 wins like we just have done every week, then I am sure that we would settle with that. I think that it happened last season where we were winning or drawing and then went to Brentford and won 4-0. I think it is a matter of time before we complete a rout but before that happens, I think that we need to keep our feet on the floor and keep turning out performances like we did against Huddersfield. Winning 1-0 is as important as winning 4-0."

The team spirit within the Rovers camp is second to none, with players constantly responding positively to any disappointing aspect of their performances.

"The mood in the dressing room is brilliant. Everybody is united and we all know that to progress in the League, we need to stick together; good performances or bad performances. We've stuck together thus far and had a good result against Luton last week and we went out and performed again on Sunday."

Rovers next week face a tricky trip to Nottingham Forest, who themselves have started to pick up form in League One.

"They are a very good side. The squad is strong and a lot of people say they shouldn't be in this League. Despite that, they are and it will be a tough game as it always is. We had two great results against them last year, but I think that this year will be a little trickier and we will need to be prepared."

And if anyone can comment on the performance of last year's trip to the City Ground its Brian Stock. The former Preston and Bournemouth midfielder scored a screamer of a goal - leading to a 1-0 win to the Rovers.

"It was probably the best goal that I have ever scored. I have fond memories of that place, but that is in the past now and we need to look to the future. We are all confident that we can go there next week and get a result. We have had confidence since day one and if people can get behind us, then it can only help our preparation."
