CHESTERFIELD 0 ROVERS 5
Goals from Jason Price, Mark McCammon, James Coppinger, Paul Heffernan and a first Rovers goal for January signing Gareth Taylor sealed a comfortable win for Sean O'Driscoll's side against Chesterfield at Saltergate Tuesday afternoon.
The Rovers took on the Spireites in a behind-closed-doors friendly game, which consisted of three 30-minute periods - with the away side dominating the entire contest.
The Rovers started the game the brightest at an otherwise bleak Saltergate; Brian Stock's screaming pass to Gareth Roberts on the left flank deserved a goal from the next move - however the full-back's cross was too close to the Spireites 'keeper to cause any danger.
A minute later and Jason Price was presented with an opportunity on goal, after a pass from the Chesterfield centre-back made first contact with the Afro Goal Machine. Price controlled the ball and took it into the box before smashing a decent effort which was well parried away by the home side's custodian.
It was only a matter of time before the Rovers took the lead, with tidy passing between the midfield trio of Brian Stock, Richie Wellens and Mark Wilson leading to Wilson bringing Paul Green into play on the right. Green's ball into the box was too close again to the opposition 'keeper and too far away from Mark McCammon to cause a threat on goal.
However, the Rovers did take the lead on the 12th minute. Mark McCammon received the ball from midfield on the left hand side and back heeled it into the path of the impressive Gareth Roberts. Roberts took the ball a further few yards forward before delivering a cross which was begging to be put into the back of the net. Jason PRICE duely obliged; sliding in to place the ball into the back of the net.
The Spireites attempted to create chances; passing the ball around neatly - however they lost possession frequently to the Rovers and were unable to mount a threat to Ben Smith in the Rovers' net.
Rovers continued to press on, creating more and more havoc on the flanks - and increased their lead from there. Gareth Roberts played an inch-perfect ball into the area, with Mark McCAMMON heading the ball into the back of the net off the post.
No less than a minute later and the Rovers made it three. A ball - again played from the left inside the box - was met by the head of Mark McCammon. James COPPINGER then managed to get to the ball at McCammon's feet and take it wide of the goalkeeper's right before slotting the ball away to make in 3-0 to the away side.
In the closing stages of the first third of play, both Paul Green and Mark McCammon had efforts parried away from goal.
The second period of play saw a different Rovers line-up - with Stuart Elliott and Gareth Taylor introduced to the mix alongside Paul Heffernan.
Three minutes after the restart and the Rovers were creating more chances, starting where they left off. Richie Wellens played the ball into Mark Wilson in the centre of the park. Wilson took the ball forward before unleashing a shot that sailed wide of the Chesterfield far post.
Five minutes later and Chesterfield created a chance - the number 15 in midfield coming forward and driving a shot into the chest of Ben Smith in the Rovers goal.
On the brink of time of the second third - Stuart Elliott looked set to score his first goal in Rovers colours. The Northern Ireland winger received the ball from fellow new-boy Gareth Taylor and ran into the box before seeing his effort deflected off the near post.
The final half hour saw a blend of Rovers first team players and Paul Wilson's youth side take to the field. Youngsters Andrew Boyce, Andrew Hawksworth, Danny Bowland, Tom Griffiths and Valentino Shielis had an opportunity to impress Sean O'Driscoll in the last period of the game.
It was Shielis who opened the chances in the second half when he received the ball in the centre of midfield and drove a shot towards goal that had to much power and not enough direction. The Cypriot's shot sailed high over the bar.
Several minutes later and Stuart Elliott saw another effort deflected off the upright. Elliott broke inside the box and received a through ball from Sean McDaid; steering an effort towards the inside of the near post which ricoched with an almighty ping.
The Rovers grabbed their fourth and it was the other new signing to get it. A massive error by the Chesterfield 'keeper led to his poor goal kick finding Gareth TAYLOR who simply kicked the ball into the back of the net.
Chesterfield saw another effort from distance saved brilliantly by Ben Smith before Valentino Shielis should have got on the score sheet himself. The young midfielder took the ball into the box with space - and despairingly miskicked his effort high and wide.
Paul Heffernan grabbed the fifth and final goal of the afternoon on the verge of full-time. The Irishman received the ball and took it 20 yards before smashing the ball into the back of the net past the sprawling 'keeper; sealing an easy victory and a decent run-out for Sean O'Driscoll's side ahead of Saturday's visit to Tranmere Rovers in the League.
