ROVERS WIN COMMUNITY TOURNAMENT
Doncaster Rovers supporters may remember - prior to Rovers' League game against Nottingham Forest at the Keepmoat Stadium - two local sides facing each other in a match to represent Doncaster Rovers at Vale Park, where community teams representing other League clubs would face each other in a tournament. The winners of the clash and the representatives of Doncaster Rovers were Owston, who beat Bentley in the game at the Keepmoat Stadium.
Thursday 8th May saw the tournament take place at the home of Port Vale Football Club; Vale Park.
Owston, representing Doncaster Rovers were grouped in with community teams representing Walsall, Tranmere Rovers, Huddersfield Town and Leeds United.
Owston initially took on the representatives of Walsall in a gripping clash. Both teams showed quality, but it was the Rovers who emerged victorious; defeating an impressive Walsall side 2-0.
Tranmere Rovers were the next opposition for Owston, where the Rovers' representative churned out a 1-0 win over the Wirrall side.
The Rovers' final two games in the group came against West Yorkshire opposition in the shape of Huddersfield Town and Leeds United. The weather - delightful all day - was getting hotter and results showed the toll it took on the young players - as the final two games saw the Rovers drawing 0-0. The two draws however, were enough to place Owston at the top of the group and into the final.
As if by poetic licence, Owston - the representative team of Doncaster Rovers - were up against the team that pipped Doncaster Rovers to automatic promotion - Nottingham Forest. The final produced all the drama desired of a football final. Forest were a goal up with two minutes left in the clash. Owston then hit Forest on the break; grabbing that crucial equaliser and forcing the game into sudden death and penalties.
The penalty shoot out saw the Rovers 'keeper make a stunning save to leave the game hanging on the final spot kick. The Forest player struck the ball and missed the final kick; granting Owston the superb victory in the name of Doncaster Rovers.
A fantastic day out, graced by terrific weather - a great day out was had by all!
Congratulations to everybody from Owston on your tremendous win!
