Doncaster Rovers youth side soared to the top of the Puma Youth Alliance north-east division after a convincing 2-1 win over Bradford City on Saturday morning.

Paul Wilson made several changes to the side that defeated Rochdale in the first round of the FA Youth Cup.

After an inconsistent opening spell, Rovers finally took the lead on the 20th minute - Craig Fletcher and Waide Fairhurst linking up well before Fairhurst confidenly flicked the ball past the Bantams' 'keeper.

Bradford were fortunate to get back into the game, equalising later on after a confusion between Boyce and Atkinson led to a goal getting poked past the Rovers 'keeper.

However the Rovers grabbed the winning goal on the 89th minute, when a pin-point cross from Waide Fairhurst needed only the slightest of touches from a head to get into the back of the net. That touch came from Jordan Lodge - fresh from his FA Cup hat-trick to score his fourth goal in two games.

Paul Wilson was understandably delighted with the win and the performance of his players.

"I wouldn't say that it was a tired performance, but it was a different performance due to the seven changes we made. It was a case of the lads learning to play with each other again and gelling."

"I thought that we deserved to take the lead and it was a great finish by Waide Fairhurst. I always felt that we were comfortable in the game. That's not to say that it was easy - but it was a decent game of football. Both teams were able to go out there and try to play football. We passed the ball around very well."

The win seals a memorable week for Wilson's youth side, especially that of Jordan Lodge who is fast making a name for himself in Rovers' youth ranks.

"Jordan is doing very well," commented Wilson.
